Biostimulators

Biostimulators form part of a newer regenerative class of injectable aesthetic treatments.  Regenerative aesthetic treatments restore aging tissue with healthy tissue through a natural intrinsic biological process for a more natural rejuvenated appearance.  Biostimulators, like Sculptra™, are aimed at addressing skin quality and facial shape.  A lack of skin quality may present as a loss of radiance, glow or firmness.  While aging may change facial shape by causing sagging and volume loss.  Sculptra™ is an injectable biostimulator made from Poly-L Lactic Acid.  This synthetic polymer has been safely used in the form of medical grade sutures for many decades.  It is packaged as a fine powder which is reconstituted in the doctor’s rooms and injected with a canula technique.  Sculptra™ was formerly known as a collagen biostimulator due to its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin.  It has, however, very recently been shown to also regenerate dermal white adipose tissue (dWAT), a specific adipose tissue involved in skin aging, wound healing and immune response.  This biostimulator can improve age related volume loss, sagging of facial tissues and skin quality for a lifted renewed youthful glow.

Onset of Action and Treatment Duration

The effect of this treatment will start to be visible from 1 month and may be subtle at first.  The result is further enhanced over the following 6 months.  While a single session will already achieve a good result, the best results are obtained with at least 2-3 sessions 6 weeks apart.  Results can last for about 2 years.  The pattern of injection and the final recommended vials is determined by individual facial analysis at each follow up visit.  Annual top up sessions are recommended to maintain the bio stimulatory effect.

Pre-procedure Preparation

  • One week prior to your treatment avoid over the counter medications that can thin the blood and subsequently increase your risk for bruising.  These include Aspirin, Brufen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications.  Omega 3 fatty acids, Ginko Biloba, St John’s Wort, and Arnica also thin the blood and increase this side effect.  Panado is a good alternative.

  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before and after treatment.

  • Arrive without makeup the day of your treatment.

Post-procedure Care

  • Massaging is the most important post-procedure step.  Massage the treated area for 5min at least morning and evening for 5 days.  Massaging for 5minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days is optimal.

  • Drink enough water on the day of your treatment.

  • Avoid unsterile make up or products on the day of the treatment.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours after the procedure.

  • Serious side effects to be reviewed as soon as you become aware of them: pain out of the ordinary at the injection site, skin mottling, blistering or permanent blanching needs prompt review.
