What is Botulinum Neurotoxin A

Botulinum neurotoxin A as an injected therapy is an elegant solution for the temporary improvement of the appearance of wrinkles.  Forehead lines, frown lines (glabellar lines) and crow’s feet (lateral canthal lines) are improved by this treatment by the action of a reversible relaxation of the muscles responsible for forming these lines.  It is important to take note that wrinkles formed in ways other than by muscle contraction may not respond well to this type of treatment and may require other aesthetic treatment modalities.

Onset of Action and Treatment Duration

After injection the onset of action of Botulinum Toxin can be seen as early as 2-3 days but may take up to 10days to show.  The full onset of a result takes place from 14days. With standard treatment doses treatment effects can last up to 3 months.  A follow up treatment may be needed in some cases after the initial 10days of onset of action.  The duration of effect may vary from person to person and on dosages prescribed.

Pre-procedure Preparation

  • One week prior to your treatment avoid over the counter medications that can thin the blood and subsequently increase your risk for bruising.  These include Aspirin, Brufen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications.  Omega 3 fatty acids, Ginko Biloba, St John’s Wort, and Arnica also thin the blood and increase this side effect.  Panado is a good alternative.

  • Botulinum toxin injections can trigger cold sores, inform the doctor if you are prone to cold sores, prophylaxis can be prescribed.

  • Avoid topical retinoids 3 days before the treatment and avoid waxing, plucking and bleaching.

  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before and after treatment.

  • Arrive without makeup the day of your treatment.

  • This procedure is tolerated without numbing by most people, but a topical anaesthetic can be applied 15min before the procedure should you wish to request it.

  • Zinc improves the effectiveness of Botulinum Toxin by facilitating attachment to nerve receptors. A zinc supplement can increase the longevity of your treatment.

Post-procedure Care

Certain activities can cause the product to spread beyond its intended site of action and cause weakness in unwanted muscles.

  • Do not lie down or rub the area for 4 hours following the procedure.

  • On the day of the treatment avoid tight headwear (e,g swimming goggles, tight hat or helmet) over the injection points.

  • Avoid massage or pressure to the area for 4days after the procedure.

  • For 24hours after the procedure do not engage in any strenuous exercise, vibration plate exercises and avoid heat exposures like steaming/sauna.

  • Avoid facials and laser/skin treatments for two weeks after the treatment.

  • A 14 days follow up appointment is advised to review your treatment outcome and to add any final doses, especially if this was your first Botulinum Toxin treatment.
