What is Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy involves deeper injection of products into the middle layer of the skin.  The products injected are registered as medical injectables and can only be performed by a doctor.  Non cross-linked HA and other active ingredients such as prescription medicines, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can be injected to improve hydration, texture and elasticity of the skin.  This process also stimulates collagen production for a powerful anti-aging effect presenting as tightening, brightening and smoothing of the skin.  Dr Silberbauer does not mix any of these ingredient preparations herself but uses sterile premixed serums from reputable medical aesthetic companies.  Aesthetic doctors are trained to perform the mesotherapy technique free hand but the Nanosoft™ needle is a specialised mesotherapy needle specifically designed for this treatment to ensure consistent delivery at the correct depth into the dermis.  It can be used anywhere on the face but makes delivery to delicate areas like the tear trough and dark circles, neck bands, the dècolletè and hands very efficient with minimal discomfort.

Onset of Action and Treatment Duration

The effect is usually visible after 2 weeks.  In general, to maintain the rejuvenating effect 4-6 sessions are recommended per year at 2-4 month intervals, but varies according to the indication and between individuals.

Pre-procedure Preparation

  • One week prior to your treatment avoid over the counter medications that can thin the blood and subsequently increase your risk for bruising.  These include Aspirin, Brufen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications.  Omega 3 fatty acids, Ginko Biloba, St John’s Wort, and Arnica also thin the blood and increase this side effect.  Panado is a good alternative.

  • Injections around the mouth can trigger cold sores, inform the doctor if you are prone to cold sores, prophylaxis can be prescribed.

  • Avoid topical retinoids 3 days before the treatment and avoid waxing, plucking and bleaching.

  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before and after treatment.

  • Arrive without makeup the day of your treatment.

Post-procedure Care

  • Drink enough water on the day of your treatment.

  • Avoid unsterile make up or products for 24hours after.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24hours after the procedure.

  • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area unless specifically instructed to do so.

  • Mild common bruising can be treated with topical Arnica, Voltaren gel or Traumeel.

  • For two weeks after the procedure avoid the following: facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, facial laser, threading, waxing, plucking dental procedures, teeth cleaning and teeth whitening.  Also avoid surgery or vaccinations for two weeks after the procedure.

  • A two-week follow-up appointment is advised.

  • Serious side effects to be reviewed as soon as you become aware of them: pain out of the ordinary at the injection site, skin mottling, blistering or permanent blanching needs prompt review.
