Medical Microneedling with the Dermapen™ Pro 4 device

From the age of 20, collagen production starts to decline each year until skin aging, observed as thin, dull, and sagging skin becomes apparent. Medical microneedling follows a process of controlled microinjuries made at speed with fine microneedles.  These fine dermal punctures stimulate a controlled healing process which induces fibroblast cells in the dermis to produce collagen and elastin.  This stimulates an increase in the quality and support structure of the skin resulting in a tightening, brightening smoothing and overall rejuvenating effect.  Microneedling can further treat a wide variety of skin concerns as it creates safe channels for deeper product delivery.  It allows a doctor to apply medical grade serums specifically formulated for dermal injection.  This may include prescription medications, hyaluronic acid, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Dr Silberbauer does not mix any of these ingredient preparations herself but uses sterile premixed serums from reputable medical aesthetic companies.  Concerns treated include pigmentation, poor skin texture, enlarged pores, mild acne and acne scarring, melasma, sun damage, fine lines, rosacea, striae/stretch marks, alopecia/hair loss and keratosis pilaris.  The Dermapen™ 4 Pro medical device is a microneedling device exclusive to doctor’s practices with well worked out protocols for the safe administration of this procedure.  Other than the face, areas that are commonly treated include the décolleté and hands for anti-aging, buttock, abdomen inner arms and thighs for stretch marks, and body areas with trauma scars.

Onset of Action and Treatment Duration

The results are cumulative.  While you will experience a positive effect after one treatment a full course of at least 3 treatments 4-6 weeks apart are needed for a good result.  For most people 4-6 treatments 4-6 weeks apart are recommended and up to 8 treatments are recommended for scar reduction.  A course is recommended yearly to maintain collagen stimulation.  It is important to note that cigarette smoking will reduce the positive results of this procedure and more treatments may be needed for an effect.

Pre-procedure Preparation

  • Please wait 6 weeks before having a Dermapen™ Microneedling treatment after you have had a thread lift procedure.

  • Please wait 2 weeks before having a Dermapen™ Microneedling treatment after you have had a Chemical peel, Botulinum Toxin or Dermal Filler treatment.  After waxing or using tanning beds/ tanning creams on the area wait 2 weeks before microneedling.

  • One week prior to your treatment avoid over the counter medications that can thin the blood and subsequently increase your risk for bruising.  These include Aspirin, Brufen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications.  Omega 3 fatty acids, Ginko Biloba, St John’s Wort, and Arnica also thin the blood and increase this side effect.  Panado is a good alternative.

  • One week before the treatment stop the following topical medications: Glycolic/salicylic/lactic acid products, retinoids (Tretinoin/retinol), Benzoyl peroxide/adapalene, Hydroquinone/azelaic acid, kojic acid.

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure before the procedure and always wear SPF (even indoors).

  • Please notify the doctor if you are taking prescription blood thinning medications.

  • This procedure can trigger cold sores, inform the doctor if you are prone to cold sores, prophylaxis can be prescribed 1-2 days before the treatment.

  • Sensitive skins may need to be prepared for 1-2 weeks before the procedure.  A consultation with the doctor will be needed before the procedure.

Post-procedure Care

  • Avoid excessive application of ice or cooling compresses after the treatment as the heat response is the skin’s natural healing process needed for the desired effect.

  • You can sleep with the medical grade concealer on your skin on the first night.

  • A very gentle cleanser with a barrier cream is recommended morning and evening.

  • Apply sunscreen daily and avoid direct and prolonged sun exposure for 2 weeks.

  • You can apply your own concealer/foundation 3 days after the treatment.

  • Do not pick or manually peel loose or flaky skin. This can cause scarring.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48hours.

  • Avoid retinol, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid topical products for 5 days after treatment.

  • Avoid steam rooms, saunas, and excessively hot showers for a week post procedure.

  • Avoid any form of hair removal for 2 weeks after the treatment.
