What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma treatment)
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is derived from a sample of your own blood and refers to the fluid retained when heavier cells including white blood cells and red blood cells are removed from the sample. This is done by spinning the sample at high speeds in a centrifuge. The heavier cells are captured in a gel at the bottom of the tube and the golden yellow supernatant fluid contains a high concentration of platelets, signalling factors and growth factors. This mixture is super concentrated in these components by the centrifugation process and contains the key to our own natural biological signalling cascade for healing. This supercharges the healing process when injected back into the skin resulting in a naturally increased production of collagen, elastin and blood supply to the skin. PRP can be applied directly to a wound but is usually injected back into uninjured skin by means of microneedling or mesotherapy techniques. The effect of PRP targets a variety of cosmetic concerns. Treatment targets of PRP include skin rejuvenation of the face, neck, décolleté and hands, dark under eye circles, the scalp for hair loss, scars and stretch marks and can be applied superficially to open wounds.
Onset of Action and Treatment Duration
The results are cumulative, and the effect will be visible two weeks after the treatment. While you will experience a positive effect after one treatment a full course of at least 3 treatments 6 weeks apart are needed for a good result. A course is recommended yearly to maintain the effect. It is important to note that cigarette smoking will reduce the positive results of this procedure and more treatments may be needed for an effect. The quality of the plasma that can be obtained from your blood sample may be affected if you have chronic illnesses, including raised cholesterol.
Pre-procedure Preparation
-
Please wait 6 weeks before having a microneedling/mesotherapy treatment after you have had a thread lift procedure.
-
Please wait 2 weeks before having a microneedling/mesotherapy treatment after you have had a Chemical peel, Botulinum Toxin or Dermal Filler treatment. After waxing or using tanning beds/ tanning creams on the area wait 2 weeks before microneedling.
-
One week prior to your treatment avoid over the counter medications that can thin the blood and subsequently increase your risk for bruising. These include Aspirin, Brufen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications. Omega 3 fatty acids, Ginko Biloba, St John’s Wort, and Arnica also thin the blood and increase this side effect. Panado is a good alternative.
-
One week before the treatment stop the following topical medications: Glycolic/salicylic/lactic acid products, retinoids (Tretinoin/retinol), Benzoyl peroxide/adapalene, Hydroquinone/azelaic acid, kojic acid.
-
Avoid excessive sun exposure before the procedure and always wear SPF (even indoors).
-
Please notify the doctor if you are taking prescription blood thinning medications.
-
This procedure can trigger cold sores, inform the doctor if you are prone to cold sores, prophylaxis can be prescribed 1-2 days before the treatment.
-
Sensitive skins may need to be prepared for 1-2 weeks before the procedure. A consultation with the doctor will be needed before the procedure.
-
A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied before the procedure to minimize any discomfort.
Post-procedure Care
-
Post procedure a medical concealer will be applied to the skin which must be left on overnight.
-
Use a post procedure cream as much needed and apply sunscreen twice daily.
-
Do not use any anti-inflammatory medications or cream post procedure. This will stop the wanted healing action of the PRP mixture. Panado is ok to use.
-
For two days after treatment avoid direct harsh prolonged sunlight and strenuous exercise and avoid excessive hot showers, spas, and swimming in chlorinated pools. Also avoid active skin ingredients such as retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
-
Avoid further aesthetic treatments, tattoos, tanning or sunbeds for two weeks after the treatment.
